Knowledge Base

The Knowledge Base (KB) serves a platform in which the Core Ontology that was developed and its structure and relations can be validated. The main goal is to act, in a simple case, as a semantic PDM (Product Data Management) vault and to provide a standardized interface between different design support system clients. The clients are able to share the information more efficiently when the native formats are mapped into the proposed knowledge model, the Core Ontology. For the clients the only requirement is to provide the interface to the KB. The clients contribute their native knowledge to the common knowledge model while revising and validating the overlapping knowledge from the surrounding systems connected to the KB. KB servea as a globally accessible data storage unit, a reference architecture, for the open and closed design plans and virtual manufacturing.

Implementation of the KB

  • Apache Web Service Engine
  • Jena Semantic web framework
  • Pellet reasoner, and
  • Postgre database
  • Webservices: XML/RPC
