Lean MES -project

Lean MES is one of the six sub-projects of FIMECC's MANU-program. Program runs during 8/2013 - 12/2017.

The ultimate goal of the project is to provide lean, scalable and extendable concept for new type of MES (Manufacturing Execution System) that supports the human operator in a dynamically changing environment. This objective is reached by combining best of soft methods and hard technology. Lean MES will create a novel MES concept for networked SMEs that allow them to observe, plan and react better in dynamic production environment. Lean MES utilizes the skills and knowledge of the operator, and supports him/her via adaptive and intuitive interfaces to work in his/her daily shop floor level operations. The Lean MES differs from previous concepts by integrating the all three levels – machine, system and network – under one scalable concept, which supports human operators and provides open and standardized interfaces to other IT-systems.

Lean MES Aims

  • From local optimization to understanding cause and effects of a complex system
  • Combine best of soft methods and hard technology
  • Achieve more efficient and continuously evolving processes and systems
  • And do this from a SME perspective

Research objectives for Lean MES

  • Research objective 1: Web of Knowledge
    • Transparency of actions and knowledge
    • Flow of information
    • Standardized interfaces
    • Modularity
  • Research Objective 2: Human-Machine Cooperation
    • Lean as a guideline
    • Human-centered but process oriented
    • Guiding yet not constraining
    • Interactive systems and system intelligence
    • High level UX
  • Research Objective 3: Competitive MES concept SMEs
    • Lean, fast to install and easy to learn MES
    • Traceable and Sustainable KPIs
    • True support for networked manufacturing
