Prerequisites of Conservation of Modern Suburban Architecture - Research and Experimental Conservation

A research project was carried out to establish the prerequisites for the conservation of suburban architecture. This work included the development of guidelines for the practical evaluation of a candidate building from the viewpoint of its technical suitability for conservation.

The draft guidelines were formulated by the experts’ work of the research team working for the organisers of this project. The final guidelines were formulated in international workshops. Three international workshops were arranged to bring the guidelines to their final form.

The first workshop took place in Rome in December 2005, second in Helsinki in May 2006 and the third in Tallinn in August 2006.

The feasibility of the developed guideline was tested in actual field cases. The practical result of the research is novel guideline for the architecturally sustainable maintenance of suburban architecture. The vital components of the guideline are
  • A method for evaluating and applying the prerequisites related to the structure and its exposure conditions that affect its eligibility for preservation and how they are determined in practice.
  • The presentation of alternative protective measures to retard deterioration. The feasibility and life-cycle economy of different options are evaluated.
  • Instructions for maintenance of preserved objects concerning pro-active maintenance to restore original appearance in the long term.
The guideline is intended for professionals, i.e. architects, construction engineers, building owners as well as the authorities responsible for the implementation of building regulations within Europe. The guideline is published in electronic form and is available free of charge via the partners of this project.
